1st Season
In the first season, Joey spends every moment with or thinking about 'the boy down the creek', Dawson Leery. The two had been best friends since birth and Joey couldn't remember her life without him. At 15, she becomes confused with everything that comes with been a young teenager and as her feelings for Dawson grow in a more romantic way she starts to hesitate around him, afraid of the unknown. When Jen Lindley arrives, the new girl from New York, she is immediately jealous of the undivided attention that Dawson gives to her and is for once not the only girl in his sights.
2nd Season
At the start of season two Joey and Dawson are a happy couple but Joey begins feel that she is losing herself- she can't ignore the feeling that she is nothing without Dawson and is scared because she thinks that she is beginning to lose her own identity. Then there is the episode of the full moon, when Jack McPhee, the new guy in town, kisses her. Scared to tell Dawson, Joey is stuck between the truth- which will hurt Dawson or the lie - that will hurt her. She decides not to tell him but, as rumors spread, he found out at the school dance and they break up. Throughout this time Joey has discovered her passion for art which Jack also enjoys too and the two go headfirst into a relationship.In this short period of time Joey is forced to draw Jack naked for a destroyed art project and is heartbroken when their short lived relationship comes to an end when she discovers that he is gay. After the initial heartbreak, Joey remains good friends with Jack.
Joey is overjoyed when her father is realised from prison but can't seem to get her head around not living by her own ways. With the help of her father, Joey is reunited with Dawson and they are a happy couple once again. However when the Ice House burns down and Dawson admits to her that he has seen her father dealing drugs again, she is once again torn between right and wrong. She agrees to wear a wire to try get a confession out of her father and once he admits it, the police is there to take him away again. Joey, feeling horrible for betraying her father and even though she did the right thing she hates Dawson for dobbing him in and claims that she never wants to see him again and wishes she never knew him.

At Worthington University in Boston, Joey studies English and Literature. She becomes very close to her roommate, Audrey Liddell and brings her into her group. Joey, after another summer without Dawson, is rushed back to Capeside when his father dies and tries to use her own experiences with death to help him. In this season Joey has still got mixed feelings for Dawson but by the end of it she goes on a mad rush to find him before he boards a plane back to California, and the two kiss and promise to see each other the following year.
6th Season
Season Finale (5 years on)
5 years on Joey is living with her boyfriend Christopher in New York but freaks and goes back to Capeside when she finds a ring in the wardrobe. When celebrating Gail's (Dawson's mum) wedding, she and Pacey kiss but the moment is ended when their close friend -and mother of one year old Amy- collapse and they discover that she is rapidly dying due to heart problems. After Jen passes away Joey, for once and for all declares her undying love for Pacey and the series ends with them living together in her apartment, calling Dawson to congratulate him on his film success.
